Tiger Chengliang Cai
Tiger Chengliang Cai (蔡承良) is a Chinese American artist and filmmaker whose interdisciplinary practice spans digital animation, painting, experimental film, photography, and installation. Drawing on traditions of science fiction, mythology, speculative cosmology, and diasporic history, Cai constructs surreal digital worlds that mirror the estrangement, resilience, and transformation embedded within contemporary immigrant narratives.
Central to his work is the conceptual "donut universe"—a mythic, cyclical cosmology inspired by Hindu, biblical, and scientific creation theories. Within this distorted gravitational space, alien figures drift through fragmented terrains, offering metaphors for the migrant experience and the paradoxical identity of "resident aliens." Through digital and physical media, Cai explores the instability of borders, the fluidity of belonging, and the search for home in a digitally-mediated, increasingly fractured world.
Using hybrid techniques that fuse CGI, speculative storytelling, and painterly aesthetics, Cai creates immersive myth-scapes where borders blur and transformation is constant. His work invites viewers to consider exile, displacement, and posthuman futures—while questioning the arbitrary architectures of inclusion and exclusion.
Cai's practice reflects a profound engagement with both technological mediums and cultural critique, situating him at the frontier of diasporic and postdigital art discourse.
